Pastor's Corner
Many years ago the United Negro College Fund adopted the motto "a mind is a terrible thing to waste". Their use of this motto was an attempt to encourage the pursuit and support of education in our community. Education is extremely important for the advancement of our personal lives and our race.

However, on this day that we celebrate youth, I want to encourage you to be mindful of your mind. Paul, the new testament writer, tells his readers at Ephesus to:

22 ...put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

In short, Paul is saying that we ought to let go of many of the things we formerly embraced before we gave our lives to Christ and let our minds be renewed with the things of God. Again, in Romans 12:2, Paul write and say that we should be transformed by the renewing of our minds. After reading these passages and others, I began to wonder why does the Bible place so much emphasis on the mind of the Christian. Here are some of my thoughts that I want to share with you.

1) The mind drives the heart of humanity. Whatever happens in the external world is first conceived in the mind. That is to suggest that any behavior we do first begins as a thought in our minds.

2) The mind is like a fertile garden, every thought is a seed. The seeds you fill your garden with will dominate your garden and ultimately your life. If you feed your mind with negative, wild, non biblical seeds, you will be driven by these things and your life will be filled with non biblical, wild, negativity. What you read, the music you listen to, the things you think about regularly are all seeds that grow and mature and dominate you life. When you catch an attitude where does it come from?

3) Be mindful of the advice you take. So often we take advice from our friends who often know less than we do about life. The other option we often choose is to find "new" sources of wisdom because we think our elders do not understand. However, we should keep in mind that the game never changes, only the people. Our seniors know more than you realize, don't let them keep all of that wonderful wisdom to themselves.

The bible teaches us in Jeremiah 6:16 "Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls..."

4) You were born with the capacity for greatness. Your greatness, however, will not just materialize like magic. No, it must be cultivated by developing the capacities you were born with. Study, use your creativity, let your imagination run wild in godly ways, don't allow anyone to put limitations on you that God has not placed on you.
